Mid-sixties 50 years on
On May 14th, the Warwick Court House ballroom echoed to the sounds of the sixties as the Unlocking Warwick volunteers staged ‘1966 and all That!’ celebrating 50 years on from the famous year of Swinging Britain.
Some cool outfits were on show, including dresses by Mary Quant and Ozzie Clarke, and guests brought some 1966 photos and memorabilia in a show-and-tell area, which included local newspaper cuttings from fifty years ago.
The disco music paused for the fish and chip supper and a 1966 quiz. Sample question:
‘Geoff Hurst scored a hat-trick in the World Cup Final; but who scored the other England goal?’*
The ballroom is a great venue in the centre of town, with a kitchen, an alcohol licence, an integrated sound system and disabled access. It’s available for hire for receptions, or other events. (Contact the Visitor Information Centre on 01926 492212).
Unlocking Warwick intends to arrange more revival events in the ballroom in the future. On July 7th, the superb singing ensemble ‘Divertimento’ will be presenting an evening of early music called ‘Heroes and Villains’. (www.divertimento.org.uk).
And make a note in your diaries that this year’s Christmas Regency Ball will be on December 10th.
