The Start of Court House Tours 2018
On Easter Saturday, the first of Unlocking Warwick’s Court House Tours for the 2018 season took place with 18 visitors to the town braving intermittent drizzle and cold winds to take part in the free 45-minute introduction to Warwick. They said it was ‘excellent’ and ‘really interesting’!
These Tours have become increasingly well known as an entertaining and instructive way of finding out about the administration of the county town dating back to Saxon times. The present Court House, which is in fact the Town Hall, has not contained courts for nearly 50 years; but the building standing at this central crossroads housed the county’s Magistrates Court since Queen Anne granted Warwick a judicial charter in 1554.
The present Court House was designed by Francis Smith and built in 1725, to replace the building damaged by the Great Fire of Warwick in 1694.
The next Court House Tour will be at 11am on Saturday 7th April. There is no need to book. But numbers have to be limited for practical reasons, so it’s a case of first come etc… Meet in the Visitor Information Centre in the Jury Street Court House.
