Stories from The Fosse Way
The guest speaker at the April edition of ‘In The Ballroom’ was Rick Thompson, a former BBC journalist who now writes books on wildlife and history, and is also one of the original members of Unlocking Warwick.
Rick’s talk was based on his latest book, ‘A Year on the Fosse’. Month by month, it follows the 230 miles of the famous Roman road, from Lincoln to Exeter, describing the wildlife in the changing seasons and the stories of the towns ands cities that grew up where the Romans had established forts.
There were also some curious tales to be found along the route from the first person in Britain to be killed by a tiger to the Cotswold cottage bought by Henry Ford and shipped to Michigan.
Helen’s picture quiz was on the theme of British flora and fauna, and guests also enjoyed the usual tea, coffee and selection of cakes, with plenty of time to chat.
The next gathering ‘In The Ballroom’ will be on Wednesday 14th May at 2pm, when Anthony Poulton-Smith will be talking about ‘Lost Lines’ – what became of the branch lines and the 2,500 railway stations closed in 1963.
These monthly gatherings are extremely popular, so it is essential to reserve your place by dropping in to the Visitor Information Centre, or calling 01926 492212
