A Traveller’s Tales in the Ballroom
The May session of our talk, tea and quiz called ‘In The Ballroom’ heard stories from the widely-travelled Bill Devitt. He and his wife, Ann, had travelled across Namibia by train, visiting towns that were being submerged by shifting desert sands and watching wildlife on the plains.
He told of shipwrecks in the last century on the 500-mile long Namibian coast where survivors found themselves marooned with no water and no prospect of crossing the desert. Rescues involved ships that hit the rocks and had themselves to be rescued, and planes getting stuck in the sand. Eventually the rescues were achieved.
The usual tea, coffee and cakes were served by the volunteers, and Helen’s general knowledge quiz was much enjoyed.
The next edition of In The Ballroom at the Jury Street Court house will be on June 12th at 2pm. It will be an ‘Antiques Roadshow’ with auctioneer and valuer, Steve Bruce. If you have small items you would like him to look at, bring them along.
It costs just £3 per person to include the refreshments, (cash on the door please). And please remember to reserve your place at the Visitor Information Centre; phone them on 01926 492212 or email info@visitwarwick.co.uk
