Locked Down Warwick – The Jetty

Here is another picture of Warwick during the lockdown, and the same scene in a 1955 photograph. And there is really no difference sixty-five years on, apart from the cars, some bollards and a litter bin.

No prizes for knowing where this is. The alley, ginnel or snicket leading to the Castle Gate past Oken’s House is called ‘The Jetty’, not to be confused with ‘The Jitty’ between numbers 28 and 30 West Street.

According to dictionaries, ‘Jitty’, or ‘gitty’ is a colloquial word for a narrow passage mainly confined to the midlands; origins obscure.
