Pubs on the Christmas Tree
The theme of the Unlocking Warwick tree for this year’s Christmas Tree Festival at St. Mary’s Church is pubs of Warwick, past and present.
Gina Tipton has researched the stories of the older pubs in the county town and provided pictures of them, to be suspended on the tree by keys.
She says one reason why there have been so many pubs in the town is that during both world wars, Warwick was a garrison town, with the nearby Budbrooke Barracks the home of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment.
With the arrival of television, fewer people went out in the evenings, and many pubs closed. But there are plenty remaining in Warwick, with their historic character providing a cheery welcome, particularly at Christmas time. Here are a few examples from the display.

The Christmas Tree Festival in St. Mary’s Church will be bigger than ever this year. It opens on Victorian Evening on November 28th, and will be available to see until December 8th.
